Sced 404 🍀

With the Sced 404 Research Method in Science and Mathematics Education course, I was able to find the answer to what kind of experience I would meet in my master's degree. Because the greatest benefit of this course for me is to choose a research topic, make a literature review with the help of other research studies, and properly write methodology according to my research topic properties. While each of these steps helped me in my future career goal, my master's degree, it taught me how to process the process and how to proceed. Besides, with this course, I was able to find answers to many questions such as how to do research, what should be considered, how to make a citation, how to benefit from other academic studies, etc. Being able to conduct and experience this kind of work as a senior student has contributed a lot to me. Experiencing this experience with my dear teacher Kemal Akoğlu also helped me to have an enjoyable process. Taking this course and the experience of ev...

Quantitative Versus Qualitative Research

Quantitative Methodologies Preference for precise hypotheses stated at the outset. Preference for precise definitions stated at the outset. Data reduced to numerical scores. Much attention to assessing and improving reliability of scores obtained from instruments. Assessment of validity through a variety of procedures with reliance on statistical indices. Preference for random techniques for obtaining meaningful samples. Preference for precisely describing procedures. Preference for design or statistical control of extraneous variables. Preference for specific design control for procedural bias. Preference for statistical summary of results. Preference for breaking down complex phenomena into specific parts for analysis. Willingness to manipulate aspects, situations, or conditions in studying complex phenomena. Qualitative Methodologies Preference for hypotheses that emerge as study develops. Preference for definitions in context or as study progresses. Preference for narrative descrip...

❤️ While we were thinking that 2020 and the difficulties it brings to us will be left behind, the year 2021 has come at full speed. I am proud of you all for the strong stance of Boğaziçi University students, graduates, and academic personals in this difficult process. I am very proud to be a part of Boğaziçi University. ❤️

How to write a research methodology?

• The type of research you did • How you collected your data • How you analyzed your data • Any tools or materials you used in the research • Your rationale for choosing these methods • The methodology section should generally be written in the past tense. Step 1: Explain your methodological approach Begin by introducing your overall approach to the research. - What research problem or question did you investigate? For example, did you aim to systematically describe the characteristics of something, to explore an under-researched topic, or to establish a cause-and-effect relationship? And what type of data did you need to achieve this aim? - Did you need quantitative data (expressed in numbers) or qualitative data (expressed in words)? - Did you need to collect primary data yourself, or did you use secondary data that was collected by someone else? - Did you gather experimental data by controlling and manipulating variables, or descriptive data by gathering observat...

What Is Action Research?

There are many ways to conduct research. Each of these ways is used in various professional fields, including psychology, sociology, social work, medicine, nursing, education, and so on. However, the field of education often uses action research, an interactive method of collecting information that's used to explore topics of teaching, curriculum development, and student behavior in the classroom. Action research is very popular in the field of education because there is always room for improvement when it comes to teaching and educating others. Sure, there are all types of methods of teaching in the classroom, but action research works very well because the cycle offers an opportunity for continued reflection. In all professional fields, the goal of action research is to improve processes. Action research is also beneficial in areas of teaching practice that need to be explored or settings in which continuous improvement is the focus. Let's take a closer look at the cycle of ...

Validity vs Reliability

What is the reliability? Reliability refers to how consistently a method measures something. If the same result can be consistently achieved by using the same methods under the same circumstances, the measurement is considered reliable. - You measure the temperature of a liquid sample several times under identical conditions. The thermometer displays the same temperature every time, so the results are reliable. - A doctor uses a symptom questionnaire to diagnose a patient with a long-term medical condition. Several different doctors use the same questionnaire with the same patient but give different diagnoses. This indicates that the questionnaire has low reliability as a measure of the condition. What is validity? Validity refers to how accurately a method measures what it is intended to measure. If research has high validity, that means it produces results that correspond to real properties, characteristics, and variations in the physical or social world. High reliability is...

Instrument Validity in Research

The instrument can be defined as to be able to collect data for research. All instruments should be vital.  Measurement is a process of scoring participants after collecting data we should use measurement. Before measuring we should use instruments.  There are 3 techniques for data collection which are  - Paper & Pencil - Observation - Interviews QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE DATA COLLECTION METHODS  - Using rate scale: It is the score of someone on a task. It includes multiple-choice questions. - Norm reference scale: There is a comparison between variables such as participants, questions with other variables. Also, there are predeterminate decisions by looking at time, environment, etc.  - Criteria reference scale: There is no comparison between variables. There is a comparison with the external standards. - Self-reference scale: It measures how participants respond to the change. TYPES OF MEASURING INSTRUMENTS • Cognitive Test: It mea...
